Sports & Recreation

Sports and recreation are an integral part of life on Okanese First Nation, providing important opportunities for community members to stay active, build relationships, and connect with their cultural traditions. From youth programs to adult leagues, the Okanese First Nation offers a wide range of sporting activities that are designed to promote physical health, mental wellness, and cultural connection.

One of the most popular sports on Okanese First Nation is hockey. The community has a strong hockey tradition, and many community members participate in local leagues and tournaments. The Okanese Hawks, the community's hockey team, competes in regional tournaments and provides an opportunity for community members to come together and cheer on their team. The community also hosts an annual hockey tournament that brings together teams from across the region and is a highlight of the local sporting calendar.

In addition to hockey, the Okanese First Nation offers a range of other sporting activities, including basketball, volleyball, baseball, and soccer. The community has well-maintained sports facilities, including an outdoor rink, a baseball diamond, and a sports complex that includes a gymnasium, a weight room, and a dance studio. These facilities are open to community members and are used for a range of activities, including fitness classes, cultural events, and community gatherings.

Youth programs are an important focus of the Okanese First Nation's sports and recreation efforts. The community offers a range of programs and activities designed to promote physical health and mental wellness among young people. These programs include after-school sports clubs, summer camps, and cultural immersion programs that allow youth to connect with their cultural heritage.

The Okanese First Nation's sports and recreation programs also provide important opportunities for community members to connect with their cultural traditions. Traditional games and activities, such as lacrosse and hand games, are incorporated into many of the community's sporting events, allowing community members to connect with their cultural heritage while participating in physical activities.​

The mission for sports on Okanese First Nation is to provide opportunities for community members to lead healthy and active lives, and to promote a strong sense of community and connection through sports and recreation.
